Het afgelopen jaar hebben wij actief meegewerkt aan de organisatie van het Wereldcongres voor Katholieke Artsen in Rome (15-17 september 2022). Het thema van dat congres wat ‘geneeskunde: reparatief of transformatief. De vraag die zich stelde is of een arts (katholiek of niet) geroepen is mee te weken aan het herstel, de ‘reparatie’ van de patiënt, of ook geroepen kn zijn om de mens te veranderen, te transformeren, door middel van medisch-technische mogelijkheden die hem ten dienst staan. Dient hij de menselijke natuur, “geschapen naar Gods beeld en gelijkenis”, als gegeven en referentiepunt te nemen of kunnen ook bepaalde verlangens die mensen een groepen in de samenleving koesteren ten aanzien van hun natuur in vervulling laten gaan? In het Engels: “Medicine: Restorative or Transformative”.
Voor de behandeling van dit thema werden deskundigen uit diverse medische disciplines, filosofen en theologen aan het woord gelaten. Al hun voordrachten zijn nu gepubliceerd in het boek “Medicine: Restorative or Transformative”, onder redactie van Prof. Dr. Bernard Ars (Brussel), voorzitter van de Wereldfederatie van Katholieke Artsen en voorzitter van het congres.
